“The Illuminated Landscape” Our speaker will be Canyon Keeper and meeting moderator Sheila Toner. She will share descriptions of the Sierra Nevada written by famous authors from the mid 1800’s to today, including Horace Greeley, Mark Twain, John Muir, Jeannie Wakatsuki Houston, and David Brower. Their writings highlight the main events shaping the Sierra Nevada and reveal how important the Sierra has become to our cultural psyche as an irreplaceable refuge for our spirits. The program is based on the book The Illuminated Landscape, a literary anthology edited by Gary Noy and Rick Heide. The talk will highlight how our view of the Range of Light has changed over time and some of the current problems facing this magnificent mountain range. A history major, Sheila frequently shares her knowledge of Sierra Nevada history as a speaker and trip leader for Canyon Keepers, Sierra Club, American River Conservancy and Road Scholars.
